Contact paper has a decorative side and a peel and stick backside, it’s more a vynial than paper.
are you sure you are not mixing it up with privacy film?
Home improvement hardware store carry this product, comes with instructions, some come with stain glass designs and frosted looking glass for light and privacy. The solid type is for shelving and kitchen cabinets and drawers. But you will need an extra person to help, it's easier.
Contact is a sticky backed plastic on a roll.

Contact paper is usually not transparent. I have seen a few types that were transparent and worked great for providing privacy and still letting in some light.
Some people call it drawer or shelf liner. It has a peel off backing, if you want to stick it in place.
