Craft snow for Christmas craft item

Arlie W
by Arlie W
Wanting to do a craft with snow for Christmas. Lots of snow options that I found out there and like. I am trying to find a way to ensure that when/if handled (and it probably willbe) that it won't come off and get dispersed everywhere. I tried the Kryon UV-Resistant Clear Acrylic Coating but it softens it somewhat and still comes off. Any ideas from anyone would be much appreciated. The attached is just a sample on a twig. It started with spray glue Epson salt then I sprinkled with snow that glistens. Looks great but if handled, it will come off.

YThanks. I did use 3M Super 77 Multipurpose adhesive....works great but it's the snow that is changing/still doesn't completely stay on. It sort of softens the snow. I just want the snow to be hardened and still stay put....maybe it's not possible.

@Arlie W well it sounded like it would work for you. So now maybe go to your local craft store and see if they can give you more advice. I checked anything possible for use and thats all I was able to find. Good Luck...

Have you tried hair spray? Or polyurethane spray.
    • Arlie W Arlie W on Nov 17, 2015
@Crewellady - No, I haven't. Only the Clear Acrylic Spray. I have lots to experiment on, thanks to everyone's input. I'll let you all know what worked best.

Grated candle wax works better than Epsom Salts as it is harder. Place glue on item, roll in grated candle wax snow, spray with lacquer or hairspray, leave to dry. I did mine on Cinnamon sticks

Awesome!!!! I will definitely give it a try. Who would have thought of candle wax. I never thought of grating a white candle, but I was open to options and will definitely try it out. Thanks so much for your help....I will let you know. Arlie

Only tried. Kryon UV-Resistant Clear Acrylic Coating. I know that sometimes polyurethane spray can sometimes yellows, but I only tried the acrylic coating. Someone else replied about grated candle wax, then sprayed with the acrylic coating. She said it worked. I will be trying it, and maybe the polyurethane spray is next. Thanks for your info. Arlie

I have used melted parafin, whipped it into fluffy snow,, then applied to a "rough" textures log, decorated with artificial greens and berries..Had hubby predrill holes for tapered candles. Results lasted for many years!! always looked fresh. he still askes when am going to make another..

Going to try this parafin/candles tomorrow on a sample wood, per two replies I had. I will let you all know how it turns out. Thanks for all your help.

I've used salt on glue then sprayed with vanish looks great and if you just dab fingers on it before you vanish it looks just like snow. I've used on a glass jar

@Lynne , Thanks for that info. The jury is still out and trying a few more methods. So far, parafin with extra coats of the acrylic coating is working best. I tried the hairspray, but my hairspray maybe was old. I still did not try the polyurethane as that would include a purchase. I will wait until weekend for that. My husband also came up with an idea which involves some material he used under tracks for a train display. I could spray it white. I'll let you guys know soon.

I tried hairspray new one but didn't work on mine either hun. let me know how you get on so far mine's sticking fingers crossed

@Lynne Well, although I have still not been able to get any polyurethane or varnish, I tried another product my husband had here and recommended I try. It is Oil Dry. I sprayed some glue, then sprinkled some Oil Dry and then with a mixture of white Elmers glue mixed with some water dripped/spread on the pieces. I waited until it dried. Then I sprayed with white paint and sprinkled some artificial glistening snow. It held up the best to touch, but I just don't like the look. Doesn't look like the snow I would like, also too rough. The product (minus the paint) was used under a train track display. See photo for my turnout. So far, the best look and feel is the white grated wax/candle. I sprayed surface with 3M spray glue. I then spread some grated wax. I sprayed with acrylic spray a couple of times, drying in between and also sprinkling the glistening artificial snow. Still want to try this grated wax with some Elmers mixed with water. Maybe tomorrow. Husband doesn't think it will work.

After all the information was in and trying something yesterday, I think the white candle shavings applied to a thin spreading of Elmer's Glue and then sprinkles of the artificial glistening snow works best. I sort of patted it down a little but It hardened nicely, without loose particles. It glistened and would hold up to any touching. Also, added some Elmers glue (mixed with water) on top. Perfecto! Thanks to everyone who had input. I would have never thought of candle gratings. Thanks.

This is wonderful news!!!! I've been looking for an easy (read cheap) way to put snow on some of my decorations and I will definitely use this method. Thank you so much for trying all of the methods and finding the one that worked best for you!

  • I've tried a lot of methods, but honestly I think they need to be reapplied each year to prevent the snow from dropping again. I find whatever I use to keep it in place degrades in storage from year to year.
