Try making some smaller sized throw pillows. The seams are all doable with basic stitching and won't take so long that you lose interest. Or take plain, purchased pot holders and applique flowers or faces or animals etc. on them.
There are many vids on YouTube to get you stitching, also some libraries have groups that meet, and look into adult education at a local school. Use love when you polish the silver, use a quality silver polish and a soft cloth. If you store the silver wrap it up in a plastic bag. Air and moisture accelerate tarnish. Avoid quick cleaning mehods like dips and aluminum foil.
Go to the library and take out a couple of how to books on sewing, make sure they show how to various hand sewing stiches so you know what kind of stitch for what you are doing. If you really like the book, think about ordering it for further referencing in other projects. The cleaning of your mothers silver is easy. Go to the store and buy cheap plain white toothpaste with no additives and a plain toothbrush with no rubber bristles. Use the toothpaste on the silver with rags and the toothbrush for detailed areas. It may take a little elbow grease, but it will clean it. Rinse it off with warm water and dry it well and you should have clean silver. This way does not take any minute layers of the silver like many other ways does. The aluminum foil method is hard on silver, do not use that unless you absolutely don't have time to clean in any other way because you need the piece now. I hope this helps! Take care of your moms silver, it is a precious keepsake.
