Finger prints and clay! Any suggestions on how to make this work?

Hi all! So, I found some really cool diy's on salt dough. You make a batch and put your child's fingerprint on it harden it and spray paint it to look metal sounds simple right? Well, I followed all the directions and ended up with a sloppy pile of dough that wouldn't hold a hand print if I pressed on it with my whole body let alone a toddlers thumb. Any suggestions on how to make this work or any ideas of some different materials this would work better with?

Adding more flour is usually the way to go.
I've never done this craft but what I would do now is google more recipes for 'salt dough' and find other recipes. You might be able to add more flower and salt too.
first try another batch with more flour, less liquid. Add the liquid a bit at a time until the dough is how you like it.
Sounds like too much water...
