I have done something like that but put it up on the back of a bookcase which turned out pretty nice. You don't say if the lights are going under the glass or on top of it. Can you send a description of picture of what your table looks like and how you want it to look. I found it was much easier to use a thin piece of foam board instead of cardboard.
I am not sure what you are asking... where do you want the lights to go.... around the edge?
use the mini led lights from dollar store with tiny drops of glue like gorella
If framing table:
First Cut fabric twice the width of board. Place board in middle of fabric so sides hang over. Foam board is sturdier. Punch holes where you want the lights to be and put in the lights. Tuck the cords in and close fabric over them. A few stitches will close the fabric covering on back where it won't be seen. You could use a temporary type of glue..think it's called spirit gum to attach to table. It won't get knocked around but can be removed later. Not sure but I think it's strong enough to hold even if you put everything under the glass.
If covering the whole top; same directions could still hold.
