Question about using plaster behind a mirror

Have whole area that was behind my mirror where paint and plaster came- About 2’X3’ area can I just put up mesh to help hold and put “product” recommendations? Finish; level/smooth and when dry repaint?

seemed simple but while googling al I find are instructions for crack repair.

dont want to pay a handyman if it’s something I can do, but if I have to..,
