I found this piece at a local thrift store and fell in love with its shabby chic look. The trouble is, I would love to know more about the piece and its history.
I love the delicate look of the floral design! The holes leave me curious also!
This is from the inside of bowl.

Probably went to a ceiling light fixture. The wires would have come down through the hole, then the light installed below this.

Don't think it's a light fixture. More like an accessory piece of china, fruit server or such. I could tell you much more if you could get a closer, more detailed photo of the "mark" on the back side of the solid plate.

I agree I do not think it was part of a light fixture, it appears to small .Are there any other markings on the bottom of the piece?

Was it possibly for a planter? I don't know if that was a craze back then like it is now.

Maybe Derby marks, Roman numeral X would stand for year (1947) and the 913 maybe the number of that item that was made. Possibly made in England with these markings. I think Royal Crown Derby. Try this link http://antique-marks.com/derby-marks.html. Good Luck!

The plate's MZ Austria mark was used by Moritz Zdekauer on porcelains made at their Altrohlau, Austria, works from 1884-1909. Since 1909, the company has changed hands but kept the MZ trademark because it was so well recognized. The company is still in operation and goes under the name Starorolsky Porcelan Moritz Zdekauer.

Try this web site www.kovels.com; MZ Austria appears in the markings and they have several pages of items with that marking.

Without knowing the size, I would guess it might be a hair receiver from a dresser set. That was the first thought that came to mind.

It looks like something that goes on the ceiling to me for a fan or a light.

Since there appear to be holes in several areas of the bottom, I would guesstimate that it could have been used to keep foods on ice. The holes in the bottom would allow the water to drain away. However, the bottom plate is quite shallow so not much ice could be used. If not for that, I think it's for another food purpose. It's not a hair receiver because there would be a lid on it with a hole about the size of a nickel or quarter in the lid to "receive" the hair from a lady's hairbrush.
