Help! How to turn this worn wooden tray into a sign?

I have this worn wooden tray.
How can I keep the old look ("preserving" the chipped paint) & make it into a sign?
I have acrylic paint, brushes, sandpaper, glue, etc.

check out youtube - there are a few ways to transfer a photocopy of your saying onto the wood so that the character of the wood remains. I haven't tried any but the suggested ways work in the video.

Perhaps some chalk paint in a complimentary color to her decor, paint or stencil your sign and set a protective piece of picture frame glass into it. This way it's not only a sign, but a serving tray again. After down-sizing, I'd bet she'd appreciate your double-duty gift.

You could decoupage the lettering onto the tray, then coat with Tung Oil to preserve it -- the Tung oil dries clear (but with a tiny bit of yellowing) in around 48 hours.

How about just cleaning it up, seal with clear finish and get a plate glass insert cut for the bottom?

@Barb Medeiros thats a good idea...maybe do the writing on a separate piece of paper and put it under the glass...then u could change it out if you wanted to

Hi Joni. If I'm reading your question right, you mainly want to keep it as is for the most part.? To preserve your tray as is, just be sure it's clean and seal it with polyacrylic or the like. You can use it also to preserve any signage you choose to put on your tray. Have fun!

@Hope Williams I agree with Hope. I'm thinkin that you want to preserve the chippy paint that's there. I would get any dust out out/off of it with a 1" or 2" unused paint brush. That way you can get into the corners. Then I would spray it with a clear acrylic sealant. Krylon matte comes to mind. This will preserve the chippy paint and keep you from losing any more. Paint is only as good as the surface you put it on, meaning if it's chippy paint, the new paint will chip when the surface chips. Which, if you want that, then don't seal the surface. :) I would also respray it after you're done doing the signage. It's a cool tray, and a neat idea that you have.

Hi Joni, i understand you want to keep the look of the tray and just do lettering for a sign. Simple you don't need much. You can get lettering online for free OR you can just freehand the letters yourself with Ideas for lettering from online. You will need a contrasting paint for the lettering since the tray color itself is dark maybe a white or a nice cream color that you can mix with your acrylics. OR maybe a color from where you are going to hang it such as a nice red or turquoise, as long as it doesn't fight with the darkness of the original finish. Use your imagination :) I am assuming the tray is already clean and ready for the lettering if not just wash it out and let it dry completely. Do your lettering then you have two options leave as is or protect with a low sheen polyurethane if the sign is going to be going outside. If not you can wax and preserve the wood with coconut oil which is non toxic and you can lick your fingers too :) Good luck. Oh I forgot to add you can add hangers in the back, go to crafts store and bring the tray and they can suggest the best ones for what you want. You can also staple two homespun or burlap ribbons to the back or sides, tie in a square knot or bow up top and hang that way. Just make sure the width of the ribbons is in balance with the size of the tray :)

Just stencil you wording directly on to the front and the seal it! I'm with you about keeping the look of it, I paint things to get them to look like that lol

I agree with Rosalia, stencil the wording or image you want and then have glass cut to fit. It's a lovely tray!

I think to keep the charm of it , I've done this with shadow boxes ,but the dpth of the tray is perfect, if you have children put there first outfits you brought them home in ,f you save the binky or something they just loved and collage styled each childs things and they had there own area but yet they co mingles, I get more compliments on this ppl love it, if not this project definitely one in the future, I mean those baby outfits are just hanging around, also makes for a great gift to a parent, or invited to a baby shower could ask the grandparents to be if they have, a baby item from there child to give as a gift to parents-to be and hang in baby room get a nice vintage or vintage it your self shadow box have fun

You can stencil whatever you desire on it, clear coat it with a light coat of satin varnish and place a piece of cut glass in bottom of tray to preserve it all. Add a photo hanger on back to hang it or none to use as serving tray.
