Definitely use white or cream decor. You can hang mirrors to reflect light. Also, you could hang light sconces on the wall, or even hang a set of lanterns going down the stairs that use battery operated lights.
Thank you! I love this Idea.
I second the mirrors idea

Use silver spray paint three fourths of the way up
Another idea for the future would be macram. A tall, long piece that perhaps had mostly creams, whites and a few of your accent color(s) would be awesome and so on-trend.
Put up LED lighting. It makes an area like daylight. I used Small led lights inside a dark closet that had shelves that came all the way to the door and were a yard deep. Now I can see, like day light all the way to the farthest corner of each shelve. I used the 4 x 4 lights on my brown cedar porch sealing that is 40 feet long. Now my porch is amazing in the dark.
You said the walls are too high to paint. How about painting the wall a lighter color but don't paint the wall to the ceiling - paint it only as high as your other walls (8 feet?). If the rest of the walls in your house are a lighter color, you might want to use the same color. You could also hang photos or pictures along the stairs at viewing height.
How about a pretty shelf that extends to where you can reach it and use for seldom used items. Lightweight , as Christmas or other Holiday decorations?
You could combine the paint and shelf idea. Paint a lighter color as far up as you can and then put a small shelf to divide the colors. Or if you don't want the hassle of a shelf (and the dusting) use a piece of trim to divide the space. You could even use that trim piece to put picture frame wire in order to hang pictures to make a gallery wall
I have the same large wall that faces the steps in my home. (Love your clock and rappelling figures). I bought a large church window at a yard sale and had mirror put in the panes. It reflects light from upstairs and helps to lighten the space. I also hung a decorative triangular plate rack under it that holds plates depicting the churches my husband and I grew up in. (However, we did have to get used to our reflections when we walk down the stairs.)
You could also have someone put in a poster depicting a lovely view or scene if you don't want to or can't!! Could be a forest or a window looking out over a garden!?! ((*_*)
I love your new stairs. I would think you could find a handyman or painter to change that dark color for not too much money though. That change alone would really seal the deal.
A special multipurpose use ladder and some staging will assist you to reach
You could sponge paint some white or cream onto the walls, thereby lightening it up without repainting the entire wall, especially if you like the color and still want to have it present. But on getting the high spots, you really need to get someone who is skilled in using a ladder in these areas, it is much too dangerous to try yourself. My husband is skilled at that and I still close my eyes or leave the room when he's up there.
You can repaint the tall stair walls if you buy ladder levelers to use on your stairs. That way you can set up your ladder easily. The picture shows two, but you really only need one, because you can move your ladder up the stairs. https://provisiontools.com/products/pivit-laddertool We've used these for years in our work.
Another thought, of course, is lighting. You really need to add more light. You could access your light because of this tool too. $100 is not that much to pay to have a useful tool around that will help you forever. I wish you the best.
