What material did you use to create the homemade stencil? I would think and Xacto Knife could work.
On a piece of plastic trace or draw your design. Take an exacto knife to trace around the pattern.
I have seen Contact paper used to create a stencil for etching glass... clean the window, apply the contact paper, draw the design, cut out with an Xacto knife or razor blade...use a lot of PATIENCE... apply etching cream, rinse, dry, done.
