You need to use a diamond drill bit made for cutting holes. Do not press the bit into the item, but let the drill and bit do the work. Also, make sure neither the bit or the item get hot from the friction. I use cold water on the blade and piece I am cutting and add it frequently. Be patient and gentle and you should have good results.

Purchase a drill bit made specifically for the purpose of drilling into ceramics, label will say it's for glass & tile.

I bought a drill bit specifically for ceramics and glass. Go online and there are several venders. It looks like a long cylinder with the edge looking like a nail file.
