How do you dye a rug?

We have a nice quality jute-back carpet that we bought from someone who was allergic to it. The carpet is about 16 feet square, but hubby does not want wall-to-wall carpet in our living room. Would it be possible to cut down the carpet to be an area rug (a local business can bind the edges) and dye it? It is currently light grey and has a fairly thick, even pile. We haven't started redecorating our living room yet, but I'm considering a dark blue or green for the color of the rug and other accents.
