How do you get projects done when you don't have the right tools?

I don't own a bunch of fancy (and often expensive 
) saws or drills, etc. I don't even know what a lot of them are and what they are supposed to do. Are there ways around using some of these things?

It depends on the project. Sometimes you can figure out a way of doing something in a different way but it depends. Figure out the project you want to do and see what tools it says you need, then figure out if there is a work around if it uses something you don't have. When that fails, borrow from a friend....
I agree with Ana, also google "Tool Rentals", many places to rent from.
Big tools you can hire. Other tools you can lent from someone but you need a minimum of tools. You don't have to buy them all right away. It takes years to collect them all. Go slow, buy the tools you need for a project but don't buy the cheap ones. Go on Youtube for tutorials to use them right and with the necessary safety precautions.
When I got into woodworking when I was a teen, I basically use my dad's hand tools. He was a building engineer and let me use hand tools until I was able to use power tools. My projects weren't the best but they sold. Then I was able to buy my own tools over time. I watched TV programs, read books back then. Now there is more on TV, the internet, tons of books and magazines. Home Depot even has free project classes to instruct the public.
Large DIY stores (Home Depot, Lowe's, etc) actually rent them out, as well.
