    1. make sure you go into beams. 2. use good strong L-brackets to hold up the shelves.

That's going to depend on your wall, the size of the shelf and how you anchor the shelf to the wall.

For maximum weight, you'll want to anchor the shelf supports to the studs. If that's not possible, use good metal wall anchors. You may want to put shelf supports every stud which is usually 16" on center. Tapcon makes heavy-duty fasteners which could be used to anchor the shelf supports.

If hanging on drywall use anchors or try to position your shelf backets to hit wall studs if possible. You can also use a metal track system which will allow you to move the shelves around in different configurations. These hold quite a bit of weight.

  • Use the appropriate brackets and attach to studs to in wall.

Individually mounted shelves need to be anchored to the studs behind the drywall. If the studs aren't where you need them then the sturdiest anchor should be used. I favor the tyoe the once inserted into the wall, will spread "wings" behind the drywall as you tighten the screw. For small wall cabinets such as a medicine cabinet (surface mounted), the French cleat works great. I've used this on a long length of wood (6' x 8") with coat hooks every 6-8 inches by my entry. I can hang 9 heavy winter coats and more and it hasn't pulled away from the wall even a little.
