You can use lemon essential oil. Drop a few drops on the letter, get a small scraper like a putty knife and gently pull the letters off as well as any gunk left over. Next, put some Persil laundry aid on where the letters were along with your regular detergent and pop them in the washer!
If you can find SHOUT in the aerosol cans I would try that as I've had it accidentally damage logo's on T shirts when I sprayed to remove grease spots. It's not cheap, sells at Wal-mart for around $3.00 a can. Don't bother with the kind in a plastic bottle as it isn't effective on grease stains for me.
