How can I convert a gift box cover into a wall decoration?

I bought a package of holiday foldable gift boxes and want to hang one of the covers as a beautiful picture. To give it more thickness and make it more sturdy, I thought of gluing it onto a sheet of styrofoam, cut from a larger piece, purchased at the $ store. What is the best way to cut this foam, leaving a nice edge? And I’d be interested in any other suggestions. I want it to be cheap and it’s only a seasonal picture. Thank you

  • Use spray adhesive to glue to a piece of dollar store foam core board. I use an xacto knife to cut them. It helps if you have a good ruler too. To bind the edges, I would glue on coordinating ribbon. And make a loop to glue to the back so you can hang it up. Measure carefully for the loop placement so it hangs straight. I did something similar with a pretty gift bag someone gave me. Turned out quite cute.

A razor utility knife to cut the foam board. Use a ruler/yard stick as a straight edge. 3M Super 77 spray adhesive to glue it on.

Hi Brocho. Get some foam boards from the Dollar Tree. And while you're there, pick up a spool of bling ribbon. Put the picture on the foam board and draw around it. Then do it again. That leaves you with 2 layers of foam board. Glue them together. Then glue the picture on top. You can use a glue gun to hold all these layers together. But if you want a very strong hold, use a glue like Gorilla Glue, E6000, or Fix All. To finish it off, glue the diamond wrap ribbon all around the outside perimeter. Use a Command Hook to hang it.

Bling ribbon refers to fancy decorative ribbon to enhance your artwork project, it would go around the raw edges of the fused styrofoam. Some of it could be mesh, or have rhinestones, generally a pretty ribbon frame applied to the sides of the piece.

You could use a straight edge to cut the styrofoam. You could also use double side tape on the back of the box to the matte of the frame

  • Is it a piece of foam core, about 1/4" thick? You need a very very sharp knife and a straight edge ruler, preferably with cork on the back to prevent slipping. I personally use an Xacto knife for tasks like that but a brand new blade in a utility knife will work. Take several passes to cut, don't do it all at once, and your edge will be nice and clean.

Glue adhesive would be the best way to attach it to the foam board. You could always use a plate from the dollar store also for adding decorations to in the future.
