Here on Hometak, there are several posts for DIY headboards. I did not examine each post to see the size. If it is a full bed, you would adjust measurements for a twin. Good luck.
This is a headboard I made for my visiting grandson's attic bed. In our case we could install this from the other side of the wall, but it could also be constructed to use with a French cleat. It is mdf board that was cut into this shape. . . actually I found it and the fabric etc. all at our town swap shop so cost was 0. I padded the mdf with thin layer of foam, quilt batting and an old sheet then the finished fabric. Stapled it all around and installed it. You could do the same using any shape wood you like.

I rent and can only use small nails and thumb tacks. I would like to make a headboard as well as other items, but all seem to call for using studs and large nails.
