I would opt for wallpaper. Since I paint a lot, I would find a few pieces of shiplap and copy them for size, shading and the like. You can explore technique on Pintrest.
I took a 12 x 1 x 6 cheap board, try to find one straight and pretty light because it will be your go-by. Place the board for your first line on the wall you want to start with At the bottom(remove woodwork first) I used a carpenter pencil to draw my line from one end of the wall to the other. Make sure your board is level. Move the board up using the first line as the bottom. Zoom in to see lines. I had to do
a faux wall because I was building a Murphy bed and it has to be mounted to the studs in the wall. My shiplap look was done on the complete wall first. if you have no help you could use a shorter board just make sure its level on the wall as you go up. I touched up mistakes by painting over the line on the wall that was wrong after I finished. Once the initial wall is done horizontal turn your board vertical and draw a line on every other line.
zoom in on pictures. Might help to see lines. I did not take picture of whole wall, before I mounted beds, sorry....it was very easy if you have help to move you board up, 6" at a time
