You can use wire and string it across to use as a curtain rod. Anything that you can hang from one side to the other would work. Spring tension rods are so cheap and easy to put up. Some people even tack up the curtains and forget about the rods.
I would buy the wooden brackets sold in Lowe's/Home Depot, drill holes in them to accomodate the rod, mount them and place a board on top. You now have a place to hang the curtains and a place for 'pretties' on top of the board.
In my lake house, I used copper plumbing pipes for a long living room window. We mounted a couple of flanges at each end, used a short length of tubing to get it away from the wall, then elbows to bend it back parallel, then another length of tubing to hold the curtain. Ours was so long that we used a 3-way fitting in the middle to hold the weight. Make any sense? It worked cheaply and effectively for us, but I agree with both Janey and Elizabeth. You can even use the chrome-look Command hooks as shown in the pic below.
I need something that would bring the rod about 4 inches from the wall. I'm putting them over a large roll shade on a sunroom window.
I need holders fo r the curtain rod. They need to extend at lease 4 inches out from the wall Because I'm putting my curtains over sun shade rollers.
Try wrought iron plant hangers. The kind that look like an upside down letter "L" with a bracket running diagonally for support. Some have the capacity to hold two potted plants far enough from the wall that they don't bang . look for a deep enough "hook" on the bracket that your curtain rod won't roll off. They should be available in the gardening section of your hardware store. Depending on the length needed, two to four brackets should support a black pipe over your window, and the curtains you hang on them. Be sure the brackets are all the same size, mounted level with each other, and are mounted to a stud or appropriate anchors are used.
If that is not what you are looking for, have you considered ceiling mounted curtain rods? These can be installed as far from the window as you need them to be to allow the shades to function without catching the curtains too. You'll need longer curtains to span the increased length, but that could work to your advantage if you've got a lot to trim off and re-hem if your windows are shorter than average to begin with.
Good idea! I'll see what I can find. Thanks
