I like your challenge. May I humbly recommend a padded fabric headboard? Start in a home improvement store, where they sell insulation in sheets, cut to the right width for your beds. Then cover with batting (used for quilting, found at craft stores), and then a large piece of fabric that you like. I've used bed sheets, curtains, shower curtains, whatever you find that's nice and the right size. Attach fabric to the back of the foam board with duck tape! (No one will see it, it's on the wall side.) And use industrial strength Velcro to attach to your wall. Good luck!

I assume you are talking about 4'x8' rigid insulation sheets that are styrofoam. To attach fabric you can also use spray adhesive. You could also get the Command strips that peel off the wall with no damage, strip replacements and use them to fasten to wall.

Another source of fabrics for the project are thrift stores, a nice pair of curtains or a comforter, sheets and fabric remnants.

Hang a pretty rug above your bed like a tapestry. The rug can be either old or new as long as it makes you happy when you enter the room. 😇

We have a king bed. I really don't like the bookcase style headboard we are currently using. We have decided to make a new headboard with a door. We will put it on it's side and put a store-bought mantle across it. Then paint it all one color.
