There are many ways to hang pictures. You can choose the option that best suits you. There is the old tried and true method of using brad nails or screws. Most people are put off from this method because it makes holes in the wall. Although this is true, the holes are easily filled with a small dab of spackling. The key here is that the nails/screws need to be driven into a stud or they will quickly work loose, especially with heavy pictures. This can be fixed by using drywall anchors. This works well, but again you’ll have holes to fill. Arguably the best option these days seem to be the Command Picture Hangers. These can be used virtually anywhere, and they do not damage walls.

Personally, I prefer to buy good, museum/gallery quality hooks and use those. Pay attention to the height at which you are hanging. Most people hang pieces too high. it can also be very helpful to make a template of where you are going to hang your pictures. This way you can avoid make mistakes. You can buy heavy paper for covering the floors at the hardware store. Draw your temple on these and hang on the wall. Move the paper around and when you are happy with it, tap the hooks in directly where you want them, remove the paper around them and then hang your pictures. I have not always had great experiences with the stick on hooks. In fact, I'm in the process of repairing an art tile that came down using one of those. Other love them. I don't.

I'm a fan of command hooks - but be sure to get ones that are correct for the weight of the picture. And be careful when removing the command hook stickers - I have removed paint and a bit of dry wall when removing one before. But if you have very heavy pieces - you'll need true nails and hardware to hang.
