So I'm assuming that your bed frame does not rely on the headboard for support. Would like to have seen your entire question, but there is nothing that says you have to have a headboard. That's the least expensive option. Many people use found objects like old panel doors but so much depends on your taste. Since I saved you the expense of having to buy or make a headboard, we do accept tips.

I put a grouping of pictures on the wall above the bed. The pictures became the focal point in the room as would a headboard if there was one. The pictures need to be low enough that it does not leave a big gap that says "missing headboard", but high enough that they don't get knocked aroubd with pillows, etc.

I have used a door and painted it a fun color and connected in horizontally on the head of the bed. You can hang on the wall or connect to the bed. There are some great old fashioned doors out in some 2nd hand stores.

I think I read on pinterest or hometalk, that someone took a block of foam (headboard sized) and covered it with fabric of their choice and then mounted it on the wall above the bed for a headboard.
