Why not go thrifting and look for some old sconces or bedside lamps. Probably cheaper that making one with the cost of parts.
Hi Carol, If the light will be used for reading, I recommend that you try a clip-on light. You can clip it onto anything. The reason I'm recommending this is because you can reposition the way the light is pointing. Which means that no matter if you're sitting up in bed or laying down, you will have light pointed at your book. I used to be a bed-time reader too. So I know how important the light is.
If you desire swag lights a simple light kit at a box store will do. I've used anything that will flip upside down to filter the light. All can be spray painted to any color: baskets, tin pail, even a colander.
Check out your local second hand store. You can give an old lighting fixture a face lift with new paint and a good cleaning.
Don;t make as too expensive, Buy Secondhand. Look out in Adds Markets, Thrift Charity Shops , EBay.
