We glued timber blocks to the back and attached wire to these. It held for a while but the glue failed presumably because of the glazed surface. Amazing it only has a fine crack but another fall will be its end.

It seems to me that gluing timber would only make it heavier. How large is this platter?
I was able to find plate hangers (metal/wire) to hang large platters. This is the safest way. I would not consider gluing something to the back, and expect it not to fail. Get some plate hangers.

How about making a narrow floating shelf for the platter?

You need metal holders that are sold in hardware stores. If they are too short to go around your platter they can be extended by using extra wire pieces. You could also build a wooden shelf for it (sort of like a plate rack with a wooden bar to hold platter in place) or find heavy weight platter holders on line like at Amazon.
