Get some foldable shelving units . That way your not making holes in walls of your rental. Then just buy some pretty candles , figurines etc to display, Better yet go to garage sales to find some things. Brands to try for origami storage or Target sells this brand which is very good.

Keep in mind you have to create decor that you can take with you, and usually permanent painting can't be done unless the landlord approves. Use designs that adhere to the wall, use bright colors in your choice for pillows, throws and such that bring in your colors without doing anything permanent.

Do not attach anything permanently to the apartment walls. If you do, legally, they become the apartment owners property.

There are some fabulous self sticking wallpapers around now. When you move, just peel it off - unless the landlord loves it lol!

Go down to the Charity or Thrift shop and see what they have that takes your fancy.

If you do want to make a color accent wall, there are 2 removable options. One is fabric with liquid starch...

Second they make removable wall paper that you put up, or buy white, seal the seam(s) with clear matte topcoat before painting a color you like.

If you are buying furniture, be sure to buy smaller scale pieces that will make the apartment appear more spaceous. Keep furniture to a minimum because it too will make your rooms less crowded.

Tall bookcases can be a great for more storage and to display your favorite items. You can paint the backs of shelves to give the room a pop of color. Tall bookcases also make the ceiling appear higher. Anchor to the wall if in earthquake country or you have children.

Curtains hung up by the ceiling will also make the ceiling appear higher, as will verticle stripes.

If you want to hang pictures, use picture hangers with the tiny nails, or use Command hooks that can be peeled off. You can easily spackle a tiny hole. My favorite trick was to catch the painters if they were redoing an apartment and get a jar of paint for future touchups. They always use the same color.

I like a nice accent area rug under the coffee table and front of the couch, it reduces wear and spotting the carpet.

I also usually improved my closets to increase storage. Add an extra rod, plastic crates on the top shelf allow you to rotate your seasonal clothes.
