I made one years ago with cloth and round hat boxes from JoAnns, in graduating sizes. Material of your choosing - cut a good sized hole in the top boxes to let the cards fall through to the bigger bottom one. I also did not glue the bottom one to the middle one so that I could just lift the top two off to retrieve the cards. You can embellish with ribbons/cords/Mom's favorite color/buttons/what ever strikes your fancy! Good luck !

Craft stores a have loads of already decorated storage boxes in many different shapes and sizes. I'll bet you could easliy use one and make a slit opening in the top so guests can easily deposit a birthday card inside.

I agree with MN Mom. Save yourself a lot of work and buy one at a craft store like Michaels. Use an exact o knife to create a slit in the lid. Place a piece of regular width masking tape on the top and cut around it using a ruler to keep your lines straight. The tape comes off with the piece you've cut out. I've also seen a bird cage used as a card box. Decorate with Mom's favourite colours.

I made one for a wedding shower by taking a medium sized box and wrapping it like a present with a beautiful bow. Cut a slit in the top for the cards so everyone knows what it is for and place it on the "presents" table. Very easy and inexpensive!
