Is it a good idea to place a TV over the fireplace?
What are The pros and cons on putting a TV over a fireplace? I have a gas fireplace that is mostly used for ambiance and have been thinking of placing my TV over the mantle. However, I am not sure if that is a good idea. Where does
the cable box, etc. go?

Pros
It saves space by mounting over fireplace
Over fireplace makes it a focal point of the room
Cons
Mounting over fireplace means you have to constantly look up to see the tv (neck strain)
Heat and electronics not a good combo
You might not want the tv to become a focal point
We have our tv over the fireplace. The fireplace comes out into the room about 2 feet and the tv is mounted on the wall about a foot above the mantle. The ceiling is the standard 8 foot. The tv isn't to high and no stiff necks. These may help you decide.

Hello Janet,
I think its a personal choice that your design aesthetic determines.
The size of the TV would be another determining factor, our 65 inch TV would definitely dominate and overpower our natural stone fireplaces beauty and be an unwelcome focal point. A more contemporary aesthetic might be more acceptable. Years ago in the early 2000 the contractors would build in tv wiring and sliding door boxes over gas fireplaces.
