Is there something to make a template from that withstands heat

I was making place mats and would like to fold the fabric around a template and press it with an iron instead of continually measuring and pinning. There are a lot of templates for quilting and cutting but I want one that I can put the iron on top of.

Either slice a very small tree limb to the thickness you want for each or you can purchase a package of them at Hobby Lobby!

I have seen rules for this purpose online at quilting places. Try Missouri Star Quilts first or Google rules that can be ironed.

If these are more than a one-time project and you have access to a jig saw (or a handy friend), visit your local Home Depot, Lowes, etc. (or maybe your husbands woodpile) and pick up a piece of unfinished smooth 1/8-1/4" board in their remnant pile. Then draw your template design, cut it out and sand the edges. This will last for many, many place mats to come. :)
