Also, you can try cleaning it with baking soda and a damp cloth. Then rinse with another clean damp cloth.

Rustoleum makes a paint for vinyl chairs, etc...I'd paint it a plain colour, then use a metalic paint for the hardware. Grey with silver would look brilliant! :)

Our neighbor found an old wood tool box for few dollar at a flea market. He sanded and stained outside, put new lock on front. Lined inside and trays with soft velour batting behind. She now has a beautiful jewelry box and it looks like an old tool box outside!

Wish I had pictures but I had an old jewelry box similar to that and decided to cover it with ribbon in a basket weave pattern. Very easy and the result was gorgeous.

I updated one by using fabric glue and some fabric that coordinated with my room. Easy and fun :-)

First figure out what "theme" you want ... e.g. If it was a water theme, I would use fabric paint in aquatic colors as a base for the entire box, then I would modge podge mermaids, or fish, or seahorses etc. to various locations on the box, keeping the top for the main & large picture. Material/fabric would work best, but you could simply find your favorite pictures on the internet, download them, and then print them out on card stock. If you print the pictures, make sure you spray them with a fixative first so that the ink doesn't run when you brush on the modge podge. Finish it up by glueing on an old pearl necklace or other gem stones. and maybe some lace :-) Oh! almost forgot, you can unscrew the latch and paint it a nice shiny gold, make sure you spray it with a light coat of fixative.

I would paint it and then do something with ribbons, jewels and maybe flowers, gluing a few jewels around the edge (after all it IS a jewelry box) and maybe decoupage (modpodge) something on it. :)

you could rub on letters or print vinyl phrases u like with a cricut, or stencil letters or what I like most...paint pens...maybe gold and silver, write beautiful thoughts, slogans, etc...the box already has a "frame"of sorts...may even modge podge a vintage hankie on top??..lots of rub ons or press on deco pieces....even all those wood deco pcs u can paint....good luck!

You might get the vinyl clean by using some bleach on a soft cloth, dabbing over the stained areas. I'd strip off the hardware, sand, spray paint, and then reattach it. Then you can add some floral embellishments to the top, some grosgrain ribbon pehaps, and some stick-on gems.
