Your poor lamp has so many things going on it may be cheaper to get a new lamp. lol First thing I see is the clear chimney with the curly energy saver bulb. I'm all for saving energy but these two don't go together very well. You can get a chandelier bulb and a white chimney and paint the whole thing white or a pale color that matches your room, like a soft green, blue, etc with with DIY white chalk. That wouldn't be too expensive.

@Mary I. Hi Mary, Well I bought the pair at a thrift store for very little. Right now are room is leaning toward shabby chic. I think your idea is great. I'll give it a whirl and if I dislike them they will go back to thrift LOL!

My other though is to take the gold decorative trim off from around the top and get the type of shade that clips on to a regular bulb. Then you wouldn't have do anything if you like that look.

Great find! What you do to them depends on where you are going to put these and how much you want to invest in the pair. The Ann Slone paint in an ivory or cream with a wax of gray or brown would be beautiful on the entire lamp (including brass parts except the switch key). Then put in a large "candle flame shaped" bulb like the ones for chandeliers, keeping the globe. A shade that sits on top of a regular bulb can completely change the look. The look you want will depend on the shade you pick. You can actually no do anything except add a shade and achieve the look you want!

@Karlene Pollner Just DIY a chalk paint for this project. Sloan is pricey. Just my humble opinion.

@Karlene Pollner I think these are very nice. Maybe a bit too shiny for shabby chic. I would suggest that you tone the metal down, by painting with a metal paint and the wood in a colour that goes in your room decor. I would also recommend froting the glass with a glass paint or by etching it, this will somewhat mask the bulb. Voila a lamp that goes with shabby chic decor. Do update us with a pic of your finished product.

@Karlene Pollner I like what @Gail Salminen has suggested. I would rust the brass, and this is ONE time I actually would use some diy chalk paint for the wood, in whatever colour you see fit for your decor. And as Gail suggested def, frost the glass chimney to hide the bulb. If you etch it, the bulb will still show..not a good thing. ;)

Hey There! That lamp has great bones. Shabby Chic the way to go. Paint the base and a different bulb with the hurricane looks nice, but then again you can get a shade and lace it up or even with petals and silk flowers. I get my supplies thrifting or garage sales.

@Lisa Rose McPherson I like your idea especialy using a different lamp shade. I have 2 so they should be cute. I will post pics when I'm finished. What do you think about making your own chalk paint? Also, we lived in Casco for years then Naples. Ended up in Farmington, My older children are still in Maine. I really miss it.

Glass paint, tape a paper doily on it, then paint away, when dry peel the paper doily off. should look really neat. i would do several light coats to build the color up. make should you have a low wattage bulb in the lamp would not want to see paint job melt. have fun with it!!!

Hey There Karlene: Hope your weekend is going well. I see where you live now is a really nice place (VT). Maine can be very nice, but I am originally a city girl from New York. But I am loving my life now. I have been here for about 8 years now. It is funny that you lived so close. Hey did you ever go to that huge church sale in Norway? At the congo church? I have gotten so make great deals there. Its so well known around here. About the chalk paint. I would make my own, but be careful when you mix it with the plaster. You can get lumps. I did see a recipe that people said worked well. I will find it and get it out to you. Keep in touch Lisa
