Find some fabric with the colour you want and stretch it tightly on the wall using clear push pins, or make a large frame from 2x2 lumber, cover with fabric and centre on the wall
use command hooks and use a piece of fabric to imitate wall paper. Or make a string art/macramé piece

Hang a tapestry.
Try using fabric with double sided tape on the fabric. Fold and IRON a small hem (no need to sew) then attach to tape. Press and let sit on fabric for a minute or two, then remove paper from back of tape and attach to wall. I've done this many times as sections on a wall and it looks great.
You can also apply fabric to walls using liquid starch... https://www.pinterest.com/search/pins/?q=fabric%20wall%20with%20liquid%20starch&rs=typed&term_meta[]=fabric%20wall%20with%20liquid%20starch%7Ctyped
There are lots of patterned and solid color long curtains which can be hung on rods from ceiling to floor. Add a bottom rod, tension or not for a more immovable look. You can also purchase a panel to paint and hang or find a creative way to display or lean up against the existing wall.
Hanging a sheet against a wall canmake a really cheap and neat focal poin. You can choose patterns or plain or even paint one yourself!
