How can I decorate kitchen canisters?

I found a set of canisters at the Salv Boutique aka Salvation Army.I want to mod podge some fabric on them. So I need to paint the canisters first so the image doesn't come through the fabic? If so, do I need to sand or rough it up to take the paint?Any other ideas besides mod podge welcome. My kitchen is in a fiesta theme. Thanks

You shouldn't have to sand if you use a good coverage paint. The Rustoleum has a paint in primer in one that should work great!

I would sand it up a bit, remove any rust then spray paint it the background color of your fabric with a Rustoleum paint for metal.

      Hi Lou,

Rustoleum works on more than metal so yes it works on ceramic. Kelli's idea is a good one because it the canister is painted the same color as the background, the actual canister colors won't inter with the look you're trying to achieve. BTW, great score!

Several years ago I decoupaged my canisters and when I moved the colors just were not right. Then, the idea hit me. I used a wallpaper border (you can cut it to size) and actually hot glued the just ends together. This way you can change it out just like your underwear. LOL! Oh, and am actually getting ready to do it all over again.

That's a good idea. I didn't think of that. Thanks

  • I would do a coat of spray paint first and then mod podge over top of it.

Yes. Use a spray primer. No need to sand. You can Mod Podge or use spray adhesive.

I love them just the way they are.

They are very pretty, just don't go with my fiesta theme.

Definitely paint first - and before you paint thoroughly clean it. Any grease or dirt will show through. It’s going to look great when finished 😀

First, I love what you call Salvation Army. I call it Sals, my aunt calls it Sally's. So cute!

I would paint them with chalk paint and put a sealer over it and shabby it up to make it look rustic.

Question... What do you put in your canisters?

I just got 3, but don't use flour much at all or sugar. I was trying to think of ideas of what to put in them. Maybe coffee and tea?

☺ I picked up the name from a friend ☺

I will put in flour, sugar, and tea. I wanted them to go with my fiesta theme in my kitchen. I found the chili pepper fabric and thought I might try decoupaging it on there. It may be easier just to go with a solid color. Maybe a fun red...
