Depends on the type of headboard and how handy you are. You can either split it in the middle and add a width of wood (covered or painted) to the existing headboard, or you could add on equal widths of just about anything to the ends. Decorate them to match the room or the existing headboard. Be creative. Have fun. And don't forget to measure twice and cut once.

Could post pics of headboard, room, decor, age of occupant, and colors.

Some wouldn't be splitable. Others might be better to remove leg supports, extend with other wood, embellished with some other ornamentation, wood or plaster. You didn't state whether it is stained, keep stain, or paint? It all depends on what you are capable of doing with tools, etc.

I love tools, electric, and hand. Once I get an idea I know I can complete the project. Women are natural and wonderful repurposers, don't underestimate what you can accomplish.

or buy some plywood and a couple upright pieces, and make your own in any shape desired. Spray glue some foam on it, and upholster away, You can button tuff by drilling tiny holes on back in design of choice, get a 6" needle and some buttons for front and back. Here's one and I love the pegboard idea ... http://www.heytherehome.com/diy-upholstered-headboard/

If it's fabric and you don't want to mess that up, you can add maybe some bulky posts, bannisters, or chair railing to the outsides of the headboard to add some width. I think a full is about 15" wider than a twin so it won't take much to bulk it up. Good luck! :-)
