I can relate! I am a professional photographer and even though I have a lot of wall space, all photos can start to look like an art gallery or a shrine. I have one grown daughter so it would be easy to tip into a shrine look.
I have a 3 pronged approach. I have a memory wall where I have a collection of hubby and my adventure photos. Just 1 or 2 to showcase what we've done. I also create digital scrapbook pages to tell the story more completely if necessary. Finally, for a lot of the photos that are "everyday", dogs, flowers, etc. I print them 4x6 or 5x7 and have them loose in a photo box that guest can look through. This keeps all the memories handy and in a form that will be appreciated in the future. Photos locked into your computer or phone can easily lost or forgotten. My father recently passed and the best treasures we found were old scrapbooks.
There are also lots of photo crafts on Hometalk that can give you ideas of how to use your favorites without needing walls.
I would suggest that the very first thing you do is go through them & label on the back the date & who is in the picture & the place!! My sister & I became the keepers of ALL our Mom & Dad's photos when they passed away & we spent months trying to figure out who was who! We were finally able to separate the pictures by Aunts & Uncles & then send the pictures to the cousins!! It may seem over whelming, however, I'm sure it will much appreciated!
I suggest using floating shelves. Then you can display some pictures, even overlapping some. Rotate them periodically. This will allow you to keep your display fresh- when we have the same thing in the same place all the time, eventually we just do it see it anymore. Maybe sort your photos by seasons? I completely agree with Dana's suggestion to label them all!
