How to Update old mirror and picture frames?

I am trying to update my Grandmother’ Den and am not able to spend much money. I was thinking about trying to paint the frames but I’m not sure how to do it and even if it would be attractive. Any suggestions on how to update the mirror and picture frames?

Old frames can be worth more than the photos or pictures in them! I would check with a professional before you paint or update... just a suggestion:)

I would not ruin this beautiful frame. The picture is a classic and really cannot be "updated". If you want something more "modern" store this one safely (as someone will want it). Go to a thrift store like Goodwill. Newer prints / pictures can be had for $20.00 and under.

Hi Elizabeth, I have to agree with Jamie and Lisa! Those frames look to be in very good condition and altering them will take their value away. A trip to the thrift store would be your best idea! Or, if she's lived there for a long time, there just may be something in another room or attic/basement you could use.

    Good luck!

I painted my frames with chalk paint and really like how they came out

Brown on brown was never my favorite combination. Personally, I would put a black undercoat and then an off white chalk paint on top, followed by some roughing up to bring out a bit of the undercoat for a shabby chic look. If in doubt as to technique, take a small useless frame and practice.

Is this a home Grandma still lives in or are you the new owners? I would start by painting the paneling if that is a possibility. It would update the room and make it so much brighter and fresher. The paneling almost lends itself to a nautical theme. I agree about the frames. Check out Goodwill or thrift shols for new pictures and frames u can paint. May even find something to fit the new theme. Unless Grandma loves them. Then see if they can be exchanged for something else in her home she loves and will work in their place. Sorry not much help but need a little more information to know how much liberty you can take. Good luck. I'm sure whatever you do will be appreciated.
