Using cabinet doors for a faux wainscoat look

I have an abundance of white cabinet doors in my storage barn. I am thinking of using them down my hallway. I want to put a chair rail up and then secure my doors under it to look like wainscoat. Has anyone done this and if so do you have any pointers?

Sounds like a good idea. A lot would depend on the dimensions of the area and of the doors. Try to keep in mind how thick the doors are as there are times that one doesn't have much room to "stick out" from a wall. With 1 x you can make the area look nice and tight with the doors. Good luck and post pictures so we can see the work!

I found this. http://www.thisoldhouse.com/toh/photos/0,,20504660_20980335,00.html However, I think it would look better if a 1 x 6 moulding was used at bottom and some more moulding on the top.

Are the doors tall enough for a chair rail height?

Our house was built in the 1860's and we have 16 inch wainscotting throughout. You wouldn't believe the amount of house dust, fly poo, wind blown dust and dirt they collect daily! They are a serious chore (and back-breaking) to keep clean on a daily basis and when left undone for a few days, they look really bad. I vacuum them every day with a small brush attachment on the vacuum, and then go round again with wet and then dry wipes. This is a big villa so you can imagine what a pain it is to do every day, but it is so much worse if left.
