Mirrored tiles in an exploded design - Collections of Pictures - Plates - Pottery on shelves - books - Your own artwork - Clocks or Sculpture etc.
When I was young and poor, I went to a discount fabric store and found a large format pattern that I liked. I bought a piece of inexpensive plywood, stapled it around on the back and hung it on the wall. That worked for a few years until I could afford something better. AND, I was able to use the plywood for another project. Also, check out Salvation Army, Goodwill and trhift shops. You would be suprised what people sell or give away. If you like "abstract" art, go to Hobby Lobby, Joann's, Michaels, etc when they have their 40% of sales on art supplies. Buy a canvas the size you need and paint your own design to match your furnishings. If you have the patience, you can go on-line and find photos you like (non-copyrighted). With a projector, copy the main outlines of the photo and paint a reproduction yourself.
Textiles, like tapestries, or large batiks or tie dyed pieces work well. I have 3 old kitchen chairs that I had cut in left and right halves. I glued the joints, painted them and hung then in a sunny stairwell as plant shelves. I hung vintage flour sack tea towels on some of the stretcher bars. How about some upcycled old junk made into some abstract art?
it depends on decor, but maybe even an interesting paint technique, or see if you can get an art student or a starving artist to paint a mural on it. Good luck!
