Hello Sharon; You can easily hang any type of curtains that you desire by using Command hooks.
You can also install a small thin metal rod, which will hold curtains, easily.
I have used sheers on my doors, and they worked quite well.
I hope that this helps you!!! Take Care!
I think it helps to look at pictures of different options. This link on pinterest shows different types of curtains and ways to hang them, as well as options for shades that look nice too:

We put up shears on our French doors as they were inside to a den. If they are for an outside door, you may want heavier curtains to keep out heat or keep out cold as well as shears. If they are to a bedroom, something light weight and cheery that complements your room decor. We hang the shears ON the door and the curtains ABOVE the door for privacy issues. Hope this helps.
I use the small tension rods that go inside the casement. Or, if you don't have the room to accommodate the tension rod, or if the windows cover the entire surface, use stick on hooks and small curtain rods for the top and bottom of each door. (So you don't have to keep adjusting the curtains from opening the doors.)
Honestly french doors are to beautiful to cover,if this is a privacy issue I would just use a window film
Sheer breezy gauze, a gossamer fabric. Make yourself into a Holywood legend.
If the doors are wood, I'd use tension rods top-and-bottom. Metal doors? Use magnets. Or, you can use stick-on Velcro tape.
if you want privacy, consider decorative contact paper. I did this randomly on both doors. In the bare spaces, I added family photos. Just a thought!
