Frankly, your choice is limitless and you will find your choice will mainly be based on the following:
Have you young children? If you do, this rules out light coloured sofas for obvious reasons.
Size of the intended space. There maybe issues of sofa size; shape, availability, time constraint etc.,
Choice of covering; do you prefer fabrics or leather etc.,
Budget, as in, how much do you want to spend on this sofa? and how soon you need it etc.,
The above and more will decide which color sofa you purchase. As I mentioned above; with a dark colored carpet - choosing a sofa to combine beautiful with it; will not be a problem.
Hello! Many design photos show neutral colored furniture paired with neutral colored rugs. The only exception is when there is a dark hardwood floor. Then a light area rug is placed under neutral colored furniture as an anchor. On occasion, dark furniture is paired with a light carpet. Therefore, light-colored furniture would look best . . . Cream, white, beige, or light brown. Good luck!
Unless you are able to have furniture exactly the same color as the carpet, do not try to match it. Instead choose furniture that is a contrast color, or neutral.
