What do I do to hide the faded area on wall?

Mirrors hung on this wall for many years. Tried scuffing up an area with sandpaper and using refinisher to no avail. This wall is in the stairwell so I would like to do something where I am not standing on a ladder 12+ feet in the air. I know I am dreaming.

That is sun fading. It's darker where you had the mirrors hung. Over time, these areas will fade too. I think the only option would be to paint and that would be a shame.

I am sure it will look lovely when you have it done. Post a photo so we can see :) And I really like your light fixture!

If you sand the whole area down with a power sanded you can refinish the whole area and get rid of the discoloured spots. Lots of work but worth it?

or find a huge piece of art and hang it there?

Thanks. You have confirmed my worst nightmare. Believe I will be looking for large art. Lol

  • Hang a giant piece of art to cover the entire thing?

  • Could you hang a really large piece of art there? Or perhaps two pieces leaving a bit of the faded space between? It would be a shame to paint the wall and sanding and staining it would be A LOT of work.

Thank you. I will find something that suits me and the space. Just need to look and explore. Thank you for your ideas.

Have you tried Murphy's oil soap? We use it in our home, pleasant smell. It is supposed to recondition wood.

The easiest thing would be to paint it and the other option seems to be to refinish it and that would be some work.

    You could paint it

    • Debg Debg on Aug 30, 2020

I know but somehow that just seems wrong and I would have to sand it first. But thanks

It looks like it has dried out on the surrounding areas. The easy thing would be to hang something in its place (cathedral frames perhaps) or paint but I'm guessing you don't want to do either of those. Have you tried Old English Scratch Cover in the light? Use it on the areas surround the mirror to try and bring that wood back to life. It looks to me like the wood is also much lighter at the bottom than at the ceiling as well.

I did try Old English. Did not change the color. This wood is sealed with something that is difficult to break down. Thank you for your input.

  • The wood is gorgeous, I hope you don't paint it. Unfortunately the best way to fix this is sand the whole wall, re-stain and reseal. It'll be near impossible to patchwork in a fix that matches or gets close, you'll be eternally unsatisfied. Research if you can use (rent) a drywall sander that attaches to a shop vac, might make it easier and speedier. Otherwise you might consider a pro.

Maybe it will fade over time :/

It would take years and still not catch up with the bleached out sections.

  • You can try wood restorer.

    • Debg Debg on Sep 05, 2020

I did. I tried one for pine and one for darker woods. Nothing. Then I tried scuffing up an area with sandpaper and tried again. Again nothing. The sealer Someone placed on the wood is amazing. I even tried stain. Just rubbed off. I appreciate your input.

Without knowing the measuements, it's difficult to recommend this but you might find a beautiful shower curain, locate wide fabric you love and sew together and adhere it to the paneling with command strips. You could then add any type of suitable frame around this that suits your decor--either metal or wood. Good luck!

77” wide x 53” high. It’s huge. Thank you for your ideas.

Whoa, that light fixture sticking out horizontally from the wall reminds me of the scene where Fred Astaire dances on the ceiling. (movie: Royal Wedding 1951)

Where the mirrors were didn’t fade.

Yes, time for a larger piece of art.

How’s about hanging a large oriental or Persian rug?
