What is it? Can anyone tell me what this is and how it was used? It is

We got this piece at Goodwill. The top piece fits the bowl perfectly. I was thinking it might be designed to keep food cold when serving by filling the bowl with ice and placing the top part, "cone" down, into the ice with food on top of it. But, what food??? Maybe a shrimp cocktail? Seems too large for butter.

I love mysteries like this! After a little internet sleuthing, it appears to be a piece of hotel silver made by Reed & Barton for the Palmer House Hilton Hotel in Chicago. I even found another one up for auction on the Illinois Goodwill website here: http://www.shopgoodwill.com/auctions/Reed--Barton-Silver-Soldered-Palmer-House-Dish-16924138.html However, what it was used for still remains a mystery since the Goodwill site only calls it a "serving dish." Duh! lol. I sure hope somebody else knows because I'm really curious now too!

Thanks for searching for us, hopefully someone will have answers to solve the mystery.
  • Shari Shari on Aug 16, 2014
If no one else knows either, I happened to think that you could probably email a photo of it to Reed & Barton and ask them. They may have some kind of catalog or record of pieces they made through the years for Palmer House.

Thank you for looking for me. I have also researched and found absolutely nothing like it either. I will check out the site and definitely update if and when the mystery is solved.

Wow this is an awesome piece! Looks so versitile. Raised bowl, bunt cake pedestal serving dish, candle holder, plate warmer - Jello mold nice find!
  • Lee R Lee R on Aug 16, 2014
Yes, it is certainly unique. It is an old piece and I would love to know what purpose it was actually designed to serve.
  • Z Z on Aug 16, 2014
It looks to me as if it was used as some sort of grill. We have a stove top version that sets over either a gas or electric burner. This appears to have signs of heat damage.

Looks to me like a caviar dish, with ice surrounding the cone of caviar ~ not that I've ever seen one in the flesh, so to speak.

@Poshe P That is exactly my same impression..Beluga caviar on ice..
  • Poshe P Poshe P on Aug 17, 2014
Yes, if you try Googling caviar dish, they're pretty much the same design. And I don't even like caviar...
    • Jeanette S Jeanette S on Aug 17, 2014
@Poshe P I guess I don't have much of a refined taste, but I don't like anything that tastes fishy. Has anyone besides me noticed how smelly some of the tuna now? I love a tuna fish sandwich rarely, but when I want one, I don't want it to smell strong! I have finally found a brand at Whole Foods I want to try.

Looks like a Shrimp server. You mound crushed ice on top and the water drains through the grates. The cocktail sauce would go in the middle.

    • Shari Shari on Aug 17, 2014
@Rosemary Kelly I think this is the most logical guess, so far, but I just keep wondering if ice was suppose to be placed over the grated area, what would keep it from sliding off the sides--there's not much of a raised rim...or down into the cocktail sauce section?

The Palmer House is still in business in Chicago, maybe call them?

@Rosemary Kelly yes, the Palmer House is indeed still in business, stayed there not too long ago. This piece would certainly fit in with the opulence of their heyday. Still is an amazing place, but nothing like the "old days" where we appreciated such beautiful things as this.

It looks like a container I use for gel burners. The gel comes in small metal tins and are placed inside the cylinder of your unit. You light it and set it on your table outside for heat or ambiance. They are beautiful. If nothing else, try this. Hope that helps.

If you search 0211-H Palmer House it takes you to the Chicago Hotel Palmer silver collection. In the late 1800's-1900 era http://www.rubylane.com/item/728315-RL-000908/Vintage-Reed-Barton-Hotel-Silver-Palmer
  • Jim L Jim L on Aug 17, 2014
I do not believe that it is a caviar server. Caviar should not be served in any type of "metal" container...ever sterling. If you notice, it is always served in glass dishes and wither bone, ivory or wood spoons are used to "spoon" it onto the crackers, toast points or what-ever.

Looks very much like this Palmer House Shrimp Cocktail serving bowl http://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/rare-palmer-house-chicago-silver-shrimp-cocktail

@Carolyn Ross You are absolutely correct. It is a little different, but I am sure it is a shrimp cocktail server. That was my original thought, but I could not find anything like it. You You and @Fran Barrett are certainly good at this internet thing. lol

Could it be an incense burner? It looks like something I saw at the Louvre in Paris in the Egyptian display

I agree with @Carolyn Ross. The text says "This is a vintage.....silver plate....shrimp cocktail server....that was made for use at the famous ....PALMER HOUSE.... Chicago, Illinois...It consists of two pieces...the bowl....and the rim insert for holding the shrimp.....The bowl is 2 5/8" in height....is 7" in diameter......and both pieces are marked on the bottom: PALMER HOUSE...International Silver Co." It looks like a dish used to cook meat. I saw it on a travel channel.
  • 394409 394409 on Aug 17, 2014
I would use it the opposite way and use the bottom as a heating device for charcoal or oil etc. Replace the top and melt your butter in the center compartment and put the shrimp on the grill to cook them. It sounds ludicrous to me as I type this so no laughing okay? Promise? Hey, what do I know?
  • 394409 394409 on Aug 17, 2014
By the way, I have seen caviar served in sterling silver dishes made specifically for that purpose. They also used a sterling spoon to serve it.

Is it sterling or sterling plated? How does one clean sterling plated items?
  • Andrea R Andrea R on Aug 17, 2014
it almost looks like some kind of fancy jello or pudding mold
  • Carol Ann McDaniel Carol Ann McDaniel on Aug 17, 2014
Do not use any thing of this nature with coals or fire. I accidentally melted into a puddle an antique covered butter dish onto a table top by using it with charcoal tabs for incense.
  • Mssmatch Mssmatch on Aug 17, 2014
I have an identical, it is silver plated and I use Wrights silver cream polish. I also use it for several purposes as I don't eat shrimp
    • Sandy F Sandy F on Aug 17, 2014
Wrights Silver Polish is the best thing I have found for easy cleaning of silver or silver plate!
  • Irish53 Irish53 on Aug 17, 2014
Ice was placed in bottom bowl. Then the top tray was placed on top pushing the ice around the underside of the smaller bowl which was filled with cocktail sauce. The shrimp was displayed on the openings so any liquid would drain down into ice keeping the shrimp served neat and dry. At the same time the shrimp were kept cold with the tray being chilled from the ice. They may have put the sauce in a ceramic bowl first.

    • Shari Shari on Aug 17, 2014
@Lee R Well...I'm so intrigued by this piece, I might be interested in buying it. If you decide to sell it, message me privately with your price and shipping costs. Just keep in mind I'm not wealthy and it would be primarily a conversation piece since I rarely entertain anyone worthy of (expensive) shrimp! LOL.

    Vase with flower 'frog'?
  • JESS JESS on Aug 17, 2014
If it sterling silver, polish it and maybe find a little high end crystal vase to use it as a flower center piece. [Brasso would bring it up to a high quality shine.] It is silver plated, have it polished professionally. Hang on to it as a family heirloom! IF it is from the Palmer House it is probably worth serious money. Make it serve as a beautiful centerpiece in your home.

  • Frankie Laney Frankie Laney on Aug 18, 2014
It is a server for chilled shrimp, a bit of crushed ice in the bottom, shrimp placed in a circle and the sauce goes in the little round holder. I remember eating shrimp cocktail out of one of these as a youngster.

I looked it up and it is a reed and barton silver soldered house dish. It was at the Palmer House in Chicago I have never seen anything like it so I wanted to help you out and found it on the net.

@E4lizerd My guess is it's the same one. eBay seller is located in the same town (Douglasville, GA) as Lee.
  • Cindy Cindy on Jun 06, 2017

I'm not sure what it is but I would shine it up like new and if the top comes off (even if it doesn't) I would make it into a planter or plant stand.
