I have a metal orb, ~18lbs, that I'd like to hang from the ceiling as art. I live in a semi-new apartment building. What are my options? Been eying ceiling fastener... http://arakawagrip.com/products/MF35S thoughts?

I think you might want to get the advice and permission of the maintenance office before you put up anything. 18 lbs. will require more than a simple install and can create a rehab when you leave...and some of these textured ceilings can get costly to repair! Have you thought about looking for a sturdy bracket solution with an arm that can attach to the wall (since walls have studs for security and are cheaper to repair). Think flagpole style. A metal bracket with a length of water pipe can be sprayed with any number of decorative metal spray paints by Rustoleum...copper to pewter.

I definitely agree with Jeanette. 18-lbs can become even more when gravity is pushing it downward. This could cause major ceiling damage & could possibly fall, killing someone.

It's a beautiful orb. I really think this should be supported by something attached to wood above the ceiling (joist). I don't think most ceilings would support this weight unless they are concrete or thick wood. Get expert advice. :)
