They are designed to fit a range of sizes, allowing you to tuck here and there to make up the differences. In the listing for the cover or on the package if you buy in-store they will give a range of sofa lengths that will fit. Chances are you will find one that will fit whether you measure overall or just the length at the base.
This is a professionals job, If you get it wrong it could be costly and you end up throwing it anyway.
