Jean, I should have said what I used for my faux shiplap. I used 1/4" plywood.
free pallet wood pickled, stained or painted
I stained the pieces first and then painted them white so that I could sand them and have the stained wood showing To make it look older. I'll send a pic when I get on my laptop!

A nice coat if paint
Thin plywood, cut into "planks", then installed onto the wall. Place quarters between planks to have a regular space, mimicking ship lap.
