What's the best way to paint a backsplash?

i'm putting up white subway tiles as a backsplash in my kitchen. My friend is going to paint flowers on some of the tiles then put them in the oven to seal it. Can she use oil paint or must it be glass or acrylic paint?

Here are two posts I researched. www.hgtv.com/design/rooms/kitchens/painting-kitchen-backsplashes .and homeguides.sfgate.com/paint-over-glazed-backsplash-tiles-25377.html. If this does not help you UTube has videos you can watch.

You can use Sharpies. I've seen them used on You Tube. Just plug in and watch. Now they also make some stuff they sell at Micheal's for painting on glass. But really don't know who well either of these will hold up . See if you can find a china painter to do it and they will last a lifetime. Have to use ground glass chain paint and fire like glass.

I used the Sharpie/bake-in-oven technique to write an inspiration on a white tile salvaged from my kitchen renovation. It was placed fairly close to the stove and it did not hold up at all. When I washed it, the writing rubbed right off. Good luck, it sounds like a great idea.

.I don't blame you for not discarding them. Similar tiles made today are used in high end bathroom remodels. You are very welcome :)

My daughter is an artist, she recommends using acrylics and you would not need to bake to seal.

Acrylics will chip after a while, you would have to seal the tile and you don't want to take the chance of the sealer yellowing. There are enamel paints that are made specifically to be used on glass and glazed ceramics. There are "Deco Color" pens that can be used, they come in different widths. I do bake what I use them on and the enamel paints I have used after to make sure they are set and permanent. If your local craft shop does not carry this kind of pen or paint, you will find them online. You do not want to waste time and precious talent on making something that will not last a long time. Just be careful with what you use to clean the backsplash, and also be careful after you grout to clean the flowered tiles gently. Grout is abrasive. If your local craft dealer can't give you a definite answer call or email the company that makes the product you use and ask them. I do this all the time and the companies are more than happy to answer questions :) Good Luck, and please post pictures of your process and when you are finished :)

@Iris Kahn LOL, Your friend must have a great back :) If I may suggest do a few when they are up on the wall see how she feels about doing it that way. If it is too tiresome, paint the tiles prior to putting up on the wall. Let them cure. Put all the other tiles on first. leaving the areas empty for the missing painted tiles, wipe and clean the unpainted tiles really well THEN put up the painted ones and clean the grout around them carefully. I think if you are careful with your grout application the cleaning can be done without harming them :) Am excited to see your end result :)
