Not so cheap, but local salvage stores have many selections.
CraigsList, EBay and yard sales
Hobby Lobby has BEAUTIFUL decorative knobs! AND at least probably once a month, they are on sale for 50% off! I put the on my kitchen cabinets. Probably not as durable as those sold at cabinet/hardware stores but they're SO much less expensive that it's feasible to replace a few if they do break. I put mine up 8 yrs ago (+/-) and I think I've had 3 out of probably 30 break. I suggest buying a few more than needed to have on hand in case they should get discontinued. Good luck!
Check your local demolition/salvage companies.
Check with a Restore (Habitat for Humanity store) in your area. You never really know what they may have from time to time. Also, someone who rehabs old homes may be willing to sell you some at a reasonable price. Also look for vintage flea markets and Vintage periodic sales in your area.
Offerup, etsy, Amazon, wish, etc.
You have obviously tried the "inexpensive" option via the ones from Home Depot... Why did they not fit... your doors are thicker, thinner, the hole is drilled in the wrong spot.... if you have vintage doors... then you will need vintage knobs... You may simply have to purchase at yard sales, salvage stores, antique stores, etc... and return, exchange, or resell the ones that don't work. Cheap and inexpensive are relative... what will you pay to get ones that "work"?
there are several on-line suppliers of antique replica hardware, also HOBBY-LOBBY has hundreds of door/drawer pulls/handles
