Sea Time

My sister gave me a couple of old, empty pocket watch cases to test my creative skills...well, it took awhile, but I came up with this little project.

I gathered some sea glass and shells and sand and Mod Podge 3D.

First I sealed the whole inside of the case with metal sealer so it wouldn't tarnish or turn colors. (I learned this the hard way by finishing up several of these and having them turn blue!) Then painted the bottom with glue and covered it with sand for the background. When dry I made sure there was no unglued sand in the case.

Next I laid out some sea glass and shells on top of the sand. I was going for a clock motif (sea time?) since I was using an old watch. I did not glue them down, just placed them.

Then I slowly squirted in a thin layer of Mod Podge Dimensional Magic liquid around and over the shells and sea glass. As it dries, it can bubble up and those bubbles need to be popped. When the layer is dried, I repeated this step until the shells and sea glass were entirely covered. The Mod Podge will clear as it dries.

Here is the piece all finished with the layers of Mod Podge, but without the glass watch cover. I didn't get a picture of it with the cover before I gave it away! Here's two others that I made to show the finished product, but these two had turned blue as described if you don't seal the metal. They look fine as if they are in the deep blue sea, but not the clear look I was going for.

Two of my "turned blue" watches. They still look cute displayed next to my other coastal decor. If you have an old pocket watch, what will you fill it with?

Here are three that turned out much better using epoxy fill rather than the Modge Podge Dimensions product.
