Something Different for My Granddaughters for Easter. Messy but Fun.
I have seen the eggs made with string and wanted to give it a try for this Easter for my granddaughters but wanted to use only materials at hand. I went into my yarn stash and found some remnants of 2 different pink yarn and various colored little spools of thick cotton thread.
Materials needed:
Yarn, preferably cotton
Trim, such as ribbon, lace, etc.
Easter grass
Balloons
Mod Podge
One of the finished eggs.
Make sure to work in an area you have protected because it will get messy, I used a plastic bag and newspaper on top. Pour Modge Podge with about 3:1 ratio of water into dish.
Blow up a balloon. I used 12" from the Dollar Store.
Here's the thinned misxture of Modge Podge. Begin wetting your yarn or thread. Here is where it gets messy. Also learned that if you unspool a lot of yarn and wet, it will tend to tangle so do a bit at a time.
Just begin wrapping the yarn around and over the balloon to your heart's content. I found that the pink yarn was acrylic and it took a lot of the wet mix, would probably not do it this way again. On the other hand, the beige one was pure cotton and thinner so it did not use up as much of the mix. After finishing, I hung them from the top with a couple of clothes pins and a hanger in my utility room to dry, let them dry for at least 24 hours, but preferably 48.
Take the egg and prick the balloon. This is fun as it starts separating from the structure and sort of blowing up. You then take scissors and make an opening from which you will remove the balloon and also to fill up your eggs. Start small and enlarge as needed. I then put some trim around opening that I had laying around. Remember, I was keen on using stuff I had,
Here's the one I made with the pink acrylic yarn after trimming. It was stiff enough to hold its shape but not as hard as the other one. Put the grass at the bottom. Sort of push it with your hand to flatten the bottom a tiny bit so it will sit up. Fill up with your goodies.
Here's the other one. Nicely filled up with the goodies, except the eggs I will be hiding for the Easter Egg Hnut! Have fun and just go at it.
Note: in retrospect, I think the cotton yarn called Sugar 'n Cream would work really well, as perhaps regular wrapping string. Also, when I did the second one, I found I could pull the whole spool in the dish and just roll around to coat as I pulled the string.
