Spring is the best time for fun and colorful projects! This pretty dragonfly is the perfect spring decoration for your house or front door. With its textured wings and bright ribbon, this wreath-like design is a cheery way to welcome everyone to your home.
The materials for this dragonfly decoration or wreath are pretty simple. I used some wire and wooden beads to form the central dragonfly body, and some ribbon for some colorful flourish. You can find the full list of materials and directions on my blog.
The first step is to make a template to form and cut the dragonfly wings. I went online to look at images of dragonfly wings. Then I freehand sketched a set on some craft paper to create a stencil. You could also print out an image and trace it to make a template.
There are a lot of materials you can use to make the wings. I made my dragonfly wings from a faux tin material that I bought at my local home improvement store. This material is actually plastic and used to create the look of a tin ceiling or backsplash. It is somewhat expensive at about $22 a sheet.
I painted my wooden beads and strung them onto some heavy gauge wire to form the body. I don't think that dragonflies have antennae, but I added a set because I thought they looked cute and added some whimsy to my fly.
I added some beaded trim to the edge of my wings for a finished look, then painted them with acrylic paint. I highlighted the embossed design on my wings with some green and gold paint. You can find more photos and the full directions on my blog.
When my wings were dry, I hot glued the dragonfly body in the center.
I added a wire hanger that I formed into a curve and accessorized it with pieces of various colored ribbon.
