Transform an Ordinary Wine Bottle With Unicorn Spit

1 Hour
Easy
I love any craft project where the prep work involves me drinking wine! My latest blog post and video show you three techniques for transforming ordinary wine bottles (or any glass bottle!) into a one-of-a-kind work of art using Unicorn Spit non-toxic rainbow gel stain.
Bottles must be clean and the labels completely removed. I soak mine in warm sudsy water first then scrape off any residue with a razor blade and glass cleaner.

Unicorn Spit will not stick to the glass directly, but it will stick to Mod Podge or to chalk-type paint. Just paint the bottle with either one first and let it dry. Mod Podge dries clear or choose any color of chalk-type paint for your base. I like Dixie Belle chalk/mineral paint.
TECHNIQUE Drip and Blow

I made up that weird name, but it describes what I did perfectly. I used a turkey baster to draw up the Unicorn Spit and squirted big drips down the top of the bottle starting with the teal color and coming back with black and white. Let the spit drip all the way down the bottle. (Sounds gross, doesn't it? Don't worry---it looks cool!) You can also come back and zig-zag the spit onto the bottle. This part is just plain fun.
While the Unicorn Spit drips are still wet, hit the bottle with a blast from a hair dryer. The heat will make some of the colors crackle. The wind will blow all of the colors together leaving you with a beautiful marbled look.
Once dry, the bottles must be sealed with an oil-based sealer. I sprayed mine with Minwax Polyurethane and sprinkled some glitter here and there while the poly was still wet. Here's a close-up of my finished "Drip and Blow" Bottle:
Here is the set of finished bottles I made for my sister using all three techniques. To see the tutorials for the other techniques (plus a video of all three in action) please visit our All Things New Again Blog. The link is posted below.

I am a VERY creative, sand blaster/diamond carver. So I use a lot of resists/masks. Just a thought...add a decal or design to the bottle prior to your or my spit, do what you do, then after dried, remove design, now you have a more personalized recycle. I use vinyl as resist/mask, easy to cut, easy to remove to see either undercoat or color of the bottle.
